Samba is a free network protocol that is SMB / CIFS licensed under the GNU (General Public License). Samba Version 3 not only provides file and print services on various Microsoft Windows clients, but can also be integrated into Windows domain as the primary domain controller or domain member, to act as a WINS server or be part of an Active Directory domain. Samba allows for network sharing on Unix directories (including all subdirectories) and printers. For users of Microsoft Windows, these directories look like normal windows directories accessible over the network. Unix users can mount these directories as part of their file structure or alternatively can use a tool called smbclient which is installed as part of Samba, to access the shared folders with an interface similar to the standard command interface of an FTP program. Each shared folder may require different access privileges of different users.
